Lazy? In need of revival.

“Elena – when are you going to have a kid?” – it’s something I keep hearing.

Granted I’ve been married for awhile and I’m settled in my professional realm. However, I’m not ready to bring a kid into a lazy world.

Ok, fine. There are a few exceptions.

Like the tailor who calls me to tell me my blazers are ready for pick-up in precisely 2.6 hours. Or the leader who spends time creating team cultures based on trust and openness. Or a service provider who notifies me that my service will go down before it does (so as to prevent panic). Or a colleague who goes the extra mile to make sure I understand something.

These “extra” steps are the opposite of lazy. They are representative of a caring, connected, engaged and loyal business providers. Right? Right.

Am I too bold to declare that laziness drives me nuts? Hearing people tell me “it’s not my job” or “I didn’t know” or “I can’t” is unacceptable.

Ok maybe I’ve had a bad day and have encountered a handful of people who aren’t lazy but are perhaps misguided, misaligned. Maybe using the word “lazy” was a little brash. Yeah, that could be it.

Is it possible that people, regardless of job function, type or leadership level, lose their passion over time? Do we forget what makes us tick? What makes us excited? We all work. It becomes mundane. But why are some more enthused than others?

Well, here’s my promise:

1) I’ll ask people how they are doing.

2) I’ll ask people what they’re working on and how things are going.

3) I’ll ask someone to teach me one of their coolest tricks – leadership practices are transferable. I’ll fuel people’s excitement to help me grow.

4) I’ll involve people more – maybe someone is waiting to be asked to help out.

5) Ask people what it is I can do to help them (ultimately help me).

6) Introduce people to others I believe they would benefit from meeting with.

My actions may or may not revive people’s passions. But they sure as heck prove that someone is willing to help them tick again.

Corporate laziness can be averted. It’s about making it possible for people to feel better about what they are doing. And why.

Will I have a kid? Eventually. For now, I’m focused on helping others tick again.
